Setting up point-of-care testing in a community setting

The DIAGNOSTICS: RECOVERY AND RENEWAL Report of the Independent Review of Diagnostic Services for NHS England emphasises the potential that point-of-care testing (POCT) has to support the development of better care pathways, and that it is being introduced and evaluated in a range of settings - including community diagnostic hubs. [1]

It also highlights that some of the key barriers to the uptake and effective use of POCT are:

  1. Appropriate governance for quality control, including staff training, calibration of equipment, and specification of individual tests
  2. Connectivity of results or images with medical records [1]

Some of the POC tests highlighted in Appendix 8 of the Report of the Independent Review of Diagnostic Services for NHS England are:

C-reactive protein (CRP), D-dimer, B type natriuretic protein (NT-proBNP), HCG, High sensitivity troponin  [1]

The AQT90 FLEX measures the following tests in the indicated time:

  • C-reactive protein (CRP) – 12:11
  • D-dimer – 20:10
  • B type natriuretic protein (NT-proBNP) – 10:10
  • βhCG – 18:09
  • Troponin I – 18:19

  • Measuring of up to five tests from one blood sample
  • Adding of new blood samples every 2 minutes
